For the first time, the Canton Trade Fair has prepared a Leading Brands exhibition area, where leading Chinese and foreign companies will have an opportunity to show their products and services.

Now that Chinese companies have established a reputation mainly in manufacture, many are seeking to move upscale by establishing international brand names. Chinese products are often considered to be cheap commodity products, even by the Chinese. The decision to have a Leading Brands exhibition area is to build an understanding and appreciation for brands among Chinese companies and visitors so that Chinese companies will offer more added value to customers.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce is the sponsor of this new exhibition area, which has 320 companies exhibiting. Of these, the Ministry of Commerce has been a special sponsor of 118 companies which it has identified as most promising. These Chinese companies are involved in home appliances, electronics, clothing and ceramics.

In the current 95th session, more than 27,500 companies are exhibiting, including many non-Chinese companies. The exhibitions are in 5 main buildings, and are divided into 35 main product and service areas.

The Canton Trade Fair, formally known as the Chinese Export Commodities Fair, is held twice annually in the southern city of Guangzhou, formerly known as Canton. The fair has had a long history in the Peoples' Republic, going back nearly 50 years to the period before China opened up to foreign trade and market reform. At that time, the Canton Trade Fair was the only venue for foreign business persons dealing with China.
