Leading Chinese telecommunications maker Huawei Technologies has selected Basingstoke in the UK as its European headquarters, and plans to create 200 jobs there over the next three years.

The selection of a UK site for Huawei's European headquarters is a major boost for UK Trade and Investment, a government organization which actively promotes trade with the UK, and actively invites investment.

Huawei Technologies was founded as a communications equipment maker in 1988, where its products are most popular in non-US markets. In the US, Cisco and Juniper Networks dominate. Its most popular products are routers and switches, which funnel traffic over the Internet. Its products are priced lower than the leader in the field, Cisco. 3Com, formerly one of the larger US communications equipment vendors, has a partnership agreement with Huawei.

The company is particularly active in developing markets and in Europe. Recently, it has won projects in Indonesia and Sweden . In China, it has already established itself as a major supplier to China Mobile, the country's major wireless carrier, as well as the country's other carriers. The latest statistics for the number of wireless service subscribers in China is 290 million, which is greater than the population of the US, the world's second largest market.

Unlike most Chinese multinationals, the company has been active in setting up development centers outside China from an early stage, particularly in India , which is well-known for its software development skills.
