As China becomes an ever more important manufacturing center and market, multi-nationals are attaching ever more importance to senior managers with China experience. Some are even showing up in corporate boardrooms.

Some of the companies which are showing great interest and confidence in China's potential are General Electric, LG Electronics, Cisco, Canon, Motorola, Hewlett-Packard and Matsushita. All of these companies have lately promoted executives with China experience to their corporate headquarters.

According to a report in Taiwan's Economic Times, LG Electronics (China) has recently promoted Lu Yongyue, who until recently was chairman of its China operations, to the position of vice chairman at headquarters. Beginning in 1994, Lu headed up the company's operations in China. Because of his success in that market, LG Electronics (China) has become an ever more important part of the company's global strategy.

Electrolux, Sweden's largest maker of electrical home appliances, has also become a major player in the China market. For this reason, the position of China country manager has become a popular and important position in the company. In February, Bai Yezhi replaced Liu Xiaoming in this position. Bai also became vice chairman of Electrolux International and chairman of Electrolux Asia.
