Toyota has reportedly signed an agreement with a Chinese automobile technology research institute to introduce environmentally-friendly hybrid engine technology to the China market.

This hybrid engine technology would include engines which run on a combination of gas and electric power, such as are used in the Toyota Prius.

Toyota hopes that this will give the company an edge in the Chinese market by sharing its modern technology with the Chinese market and government.

The agreement was reportedly signed with the China Automobile Technology Research Institute, based in Tianjin on July 31. Under the agreement, Toyota will have demonstration tests, and will participate in policy research on fuel-efficient technology and research of alternative energies for cars. Toyota will ship its Prius hybrid-engine cars for road tests in China and the two parties also plan to research the role of government in promoting the use of low-pollution cars, which are gaining popularity in Japan, the US and elsewhere.

The Chinese auto market has experienced rapid growth this year, which have led to higher oil imports . As the host for the Beijing 2008 Olympics and 2010 Shanghai World's Fair, the Chinese government is anxious to show that rapid economic development does not come at the expense of pollution and the environment, and special emphasis has been placed on developing and acquiring alternative clean technologies.
