In an aggressive move to expand its presence in western China, WalMart plans to open a 4-level 40,000 square meter store in Chongqing in Sichuan province.

Such a move would be the company's first store in the city of 20 million. A team of WalMart China personnel, led by their general manager Zhong Haowei, arrived in the city on July 4 to select a 30-acre piece of land at Jioulongpo in Chongqing. This will be the site of WalMart's flagship store in Chongqing. It is not yet known when the store will open.

After the Jioulongpo store opens, WalMart will open another store in Nanping, also in Chongqing. Sam's Club has already entered China, and has a store in Beijing.

WalMart's China headquarters and distribution center is in Shenzhen, across the border from Hong Kong. The number of stores in China now totals 26.
